Prescriber FAQ

Common Questions from Prescribers

How do I write a compounding prescription?
A compounding prescription should include: the drug name(s) and strength(s), the dosage form (cream, capsule, liquid, etc.), the base or vehicle if you have a preference, quantity, and directions for use. If you are unsure about formulation details, call us before writing — our pharmacists can recommend the most clinically appropriate formula for your patient's needs. No special form is required; a standard prescription pad or letterhead is fine.
What is the difference between Level A, B, and C compounding?
NAPRA Model Standards classify non-sterile compounding into three levels based on complexity and risk. Level A covers simple preparations with low risk (basic dilutions, mixing of commercially available products). Level B covers more complex preparations with moderate risk. Level C — which Humber Bay Compounding Pharmacy is certified for — covers hazardous drug compounding including hormones, chemotherapy-adjacent compounds, and other high-risk preparations. Level C facilities require a dedicated negative-pressure room, a certified C-PEC hood with HEPA filtration, and ongoing environmental monitoring. Most pharmacies in Ontario do not operate at Level C.
Can you provide a Certificate of Analysis for compounded preparations?
Yes. We provide Certificates of Analysis (CoAs) and ingredient monographs on request. These documents are useful for patient counselling, medical record documentation, and regulatory compliance in your practice. Simply request this when sending the prescription or call us directly.
Do you accept electronic prescriptions?
Yes. We accept prescriptions by fax to (647) 351-2323, by phone from your office, in person, and via Ontario's electronic prescribing system. Whichever method works best for your practice workflow is fine with us.
Will you contact me if there is an issue with the prescription?
Yes. If there is a clinical concern, a formulation question, or an ingredient availability issue with the prescription, our pharmacist will contact your office directly before proceeding. We do not substitute ingredients or change formulas without prescriber authorization.
What is your turnaround time for compounded prescriptions?
Most non-sterile compounded prescriptions are ready within 24 to 48 hours of receipt. Complex multi-ingredient preparations or those requiring ingredient sourcing may take slightly longer. Same-day compounding is available for urgent situations — call us at (647) 348-2323 to arrange.
